With World Water Day approaching, Bruce Fellows and TMU students have submitted an e-petition to the House of Commons to mobilize support and awareness around the UN’s World Water Day and pass a national resolution to formally establish a Canada Water Week. Recognizing that celebrations and activities around World Water Day has mobilized individuals and groups in Canada for a number of years, our e-petition is based on the increasing need for water awareness, literacy, education, engagement and action by making Canada Water Week official!

We have 30 days to gather signatures. We need everyone’s help to mobilize support. World Water Day 2026 presents an opportunity for the resolution to be tabled and passed in the House of Commons to formally establish Canada Water Week.
~~~~
Chaque année, les bourses Bruce en politique canadienne relative à l'eau douce de l'Université métropolitaine de Toronto offrent à un groupe d'étudiants diplômés la possibilité de travailler sur des soumissions afin d'en apprendre davantage sur la politique relative à l'eau et le processus politique au Canada.
À l'approche de la Journée mondiale de l'eau, les boursiers Bruce et les étudiants de l'Université métropolitaine de Toronto ont soumis une pétition électronique à la Chambre des communes afin de mobiliser le soutien et la sensibilisation autour de la Journée mondiale de l'eau des Nations unies et d'adopter une résolution nationale visant à établir officiellement une Semaine de l'eau au Canada. Conscients que les célébrations et les activités organisées autour de la Journée mondiale de l'eau mobilisent depuis plusieurs années des individus et des groupes au Canada, notre pétition électronique repose sur le besoin croissant de sensibilisation, d'éducation, d'engagement et d'action en faveur de l'eau, en officialisant la Semaine de l'eau au Canada !
Nous avons 30 jours pour recueillir des signatures. Nous avons besoin de l'aide de tous pour mobiliser le soutien. La Journée mondiale de l'eau 2026 offre l'occasion de présenter et d'adopter la résolution à la Chambre des communes afin d'instaurer officiellement la Semaine de l'eau au Canada. Vous pouvez signer la pétition ici : https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Sign/e-7165.
Call for Applications: Co-Editor-in-Chief, FACETS
FACETS is looking for a Co-Editor-in-Chief to help manage the body of interdisciplinary work submitted to the journal, and to provide leadership as the journal seeks to expand its scope to include more interdisciplinary social science research. FACETS currently has two Co-Editors-in-Chief who work together to lead and grow the journal, bringing the total to three with the addition of this role. Co-Editor-in-Chief is a volunteer position.
The journal
FACETS is Canada’s first multidisciplinary open access science journal. Established in 2016, it is published by Canadian Science Publishing, Canada's independent, not-for-profit publisher of international scientific journals. FACETS is the official journal of the Royal Society of Canada’s Academy of Science, and is also affiliated with the Canadian Science Policy Centre, the Canadian Society of Ecology and Evolution, the Canadian Society of Vertebrate Palaeontology, and the Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences.
FACETS publishes rigorously vetted multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, much of which seeks to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). FACETS primarily features original research, but also accommodates reviews, retrospectives, thought pieces, and articles on the application of scientific knowledge to policy, industry, management, and public interests.
The role
The Co-Editor-in-Chief is responsible for curating journal content, shaping editorial priorities, and guiding journal development. This involves:
working with the journal team on editorial priorities and journal direction, and on strategies to grow the journal, enhance its reputation, and attract high-quality content;
applying their expertise to help the journal team propel FACETS' growth in integrative social science research;
working with a group of Senior Editors to uphold the high quality of articles published in the journal by maintaining editorial standards and advising on manuscripts during peer review as needed;
selecting and working with a board of editors who represent the diverse disciplines and populations the journal serves, particularly those with the appropriate expertise in integrative social science research;
holding the journal to a high standard of peer review and ethical best practice in research and reporting;
building relationships and working with journal stakeholders to expand author and reviewer pools that include more diverse voices and perspectives.
The Co-Editor-in-Chief reports to the Executive Editor-in-Chief at Canadian Science Publishing.
What we’re looking for
The ideal Co-Editor-in-Chief for FACETS:
has direct experience with social science methods and interdisciplinary research (familiarity working with Indigenous communities and knowledges would be helpful but not necessary for this role);
cultivates a broad network of contacts and collaborators, and can be a confident champion for the journal within their own circles and when reaching out to new, previously excluded or untapped communities;
has experience as an editor, and is deeply familiar with research, peer review, and publication ethics;
supports open science and actively seeks to advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility within their sphere;
is an effective communicator with a collaborative work style; and
can dedicate time on a regular basis to help grow a thriving and dynamic journal.
Canadian Science Publishing is committed to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA), and seeks to ensure that journal editorial boards reflect the diverse identities and characteristics of its research communities. We encourage applicants to highlight any additional information about their background that would contribute to this diversity of perspective and lived experience.
Applications should include:
Full CV
A letter (maximum 2 pages) including:
a summary of your editorial experience and why you are interested in this role
a brief description of your vision and goals for the journal over the next few years, including how you would build on the journal's success and how you would promote EDIA within the journal
Applications and nominations are due by May 1, 2024.
The term start and length of term are negotiable.
Applications and nominations should be sent to Jenny Crick (jenny.crick@cdnsciencepub.com).
PETERS AND RIGLER AWARD DECISIONS
The SCAS-SCSA committee has recently awarded the Robert H. Peters Award and the Frank H. Rigler Award for 2022. We would like to recognize Graydon McKee as the winner of the Peters Award and Dr. Beatrix Beisner as the winner of the Rigler Award.
Peters Award, winner: Graydon McKee
The Robert H. Peters Award recognizes the best aquatic sciences paper published in the preceding year by a Canadian student or a student working in Canada. The winner of the 2022 Peters Award is Graydon McKee, a recent graduate from Lakehead University. Graydon’s paper titled, “Alternative migratory strategies related to life history differences in the walleye (Sander vitreus)” was published in Movement Ecology (McKee et al. 2022). In the words of Graydon’s nominator, “Graydon’s work stands to make a significant contribution to understanding the inherent variation that exists within managed populations like fisheries, indicating that management strategies targeted at “a population” without recognizing this variation is unlikely to succeed, or alternatively, only potentially benefit one fraction of the population”.
Congratulations Graydon! We look forward to seeing more exciting publications in your research career!
Rigler Award, winner: Dr. Beatrix Beisner
The Frank H. Rigler Award recognizes and honours major achievements in the field of limnology by Canadians or those working in Canada. The 2023 Rigler awardee is Dr. Beatrix Beisner, professor at the University of Quebec at Montreal. Her research focuses on plankton community ecology, with research themes encompassing biodiversity and invasion ecology. Over her research career so far, Dr. Beisner has trained 14 postdoctoral fellows, 24 PhD students, and 28 MSc students, and published over 100 peer-reviewed articles that have had lasting impact on the field. Some of Dr. Beisner’s most significant contributions include work on aquatic community dynamics as they relate to climate change and the application of functional ecology in planktonic communities. Her paper on alternative stable states in ecology (Beisner et al. 2003) has been particularly well cited across disciplines. Dr. Beisner is an established leader in Canadian limnology and is currently the co-director of the Groupe de Recherche Interuniversitaire en Limnologie et Environnement Aquatique (GRIL) and has been instrumental in organizing annual meetings, collaborative research projects, and providing access to critical infrastructure for limnological research. The research that has emerged from GRIL is renowned across Canada and globally.
Congratulations Bea!! We look forward to seeing your plenary talk at SCAS in Montreal in Feb 2023!
Lauréat du Prix Peters: Graydon McKee
Le Prix Robert H. Peters distingue le meilleur article sur les sciences aquatiques publié l'année précédente par un étudiant canadien ou un étudiant travaillant au Canada. Le gagnant du prix Peters 2022 est Graydon McKee, récemment diplômé de l'Université Lakehead. L'article de Graydon est intitulé " Stratégies migratoires alternatives liées aux différences de cycle biologique chez le doré jaune (Sander vitreus) " et a été publié dans le journal Movement Ecology en 2022 (McKee et al. 2022). Selon la personne qui a proposé la candidature de Graydon, "le travail de Graydon contribuera de manière substantielle à la compréhension de la variation inhérente qui existe chez les populations régulées par les pêcheries, indiquant que les stratégies de régulation visant "une population" sans tenir compte de cette variation peuvent être inefficaces ou, au contraire, de ne profiter qu'à une fraction de la population".
Félicitations Graydon ! Nous sommes heureux de lire d'autres publications intéressantes dans votre carrière de scientifique!
Lauréate du Prix Rigler: Dr. Beatrix Beisner
Le Prix Frank H. Rigler distingue et honore des accomplissements exceptionnels dans le domaine de la limnologie par des Canadiens ou des personnes qui travaillent au Canada. La gagnante du prix Rigler 2023 est Beatrix Beisner, une professeure à l'Université du Québec à Montréal. Ses recherches se concentrent sur l'écologie des communautés planctoniques, avec des thèmes de recherche comprenant la biodiversité et l'écologie des invasions.
STATEMENT ON CSP PARTNERSHIP
The Society of Canadian Aquatic Sciences (SCAS) and Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) are thrilled to announce our new partnership.
CSP is Canada’s largest not-for-profit scientific journal publisher, publishing several journals that connect with SCAS members, including: Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (CJFAS), Canadian Journal of Zoology, Environmental Reviews, and FACETS. Our mutual respect for environmental science and its advancement in Canada make this collaboration natural and especially compelling.
We are both organizations that value world-class research and exceptional, peer-reviewed publications as a foundation for science communication. Our shared commitment to the development of a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and just community underlies everything we do and fortifies our passion for evidence-informed decision making.
Thanks to this partnership, CSP will support SCAS through:
● continued sponsorship of the Frank Rigler Award and Stevenson Lectureship, including CJFAS submission invitations for recipients,
● webinars and other resources for early-career SCAS members interested in understanding the publication process,
● development of special issues and symposium proposals from SCAS members, with a particular interest in those organized by, or featuring, early-career members,
● promotion of SCAS members’ works on CSP communication channels, and
● discounted rates for subscriptions to CSP journals.
Dr. Kerri Finlay, President of SCAS:
“Canadian Aquatic Scientists have had a long history of publishing, editing, reviewing, and reading manuscripts in CSP journals. This formalized partnership further strengthens the relationship between the organizations and affirms our commitment to high-quality aquatic science research and early career support.”
Dr. Sherestha Saini, Managing Editor, Environmental Sciences Journals at CSP:
“This symbiotic partnership furthers the goals of aquatic research excellence and early-career researcher support that CSP and SCAS are both dedicated to achieving and sustaining. We are excited to continue championing integrity and innovation in environmental science alongside SCAS members that work so diligently to accomplish the same.”
