At the 2023 SCAS meeting in Montreal, a group of CJFAS editors gathered to talk about the journal. CJFAS has long existed because of the efforts of so many within the SCAS community who contribute as authors, readers, peer reviewers, and editors. Dr. Jeff Hutchings, co-founder of SCAS, was exceptional in this regard, having served as Editor-in-Chief (2003-2007) and Associate Editor (1997-2002) of CJFAS, in addition to authoring more than 35 papers in the journal.

The idea took shape to build a tribute collection of new papers from those whose own research is influenced by Dr. Hutchings’ foundational research and perspectives.

It seems fitting that we recognize Dr. Hutchings, a key figure in Canadian fisheries and aquatic sciences, the same year we recognize the 125th anniversary of CJFAS. Several papers define the journal’s history, including the 1997 commentary by Dr. Hutchings and colleagues that asked, “Is scientific inquiry incompatible with government information control?”. This question was revisited twenty-five years later in CJFAS.

Lors de la réunion de la SCSA de 2023 à Montréal, un groupe de rédacteurs en chef du CJFAS s’est réuni pour discuter de la revue. Le CJFAS existe depuis longtemps grâce aux efforts de nombreux membres de la communauté SCSA qui y contribuent en tant qu’auteurs, lecteurs, évaluateurs et rédacteurs en chef. Le Dr Jeff Hutchings, cofondateur de la SCSA, s’est particulièrement illustré à cet égard, ayant occupé les fonctions de rédacteur en chef (2003-2007) et de rédacteur adjoint (1997-2002) du CJFAS, en plus d’avoir rédigé plus de 35 articles pour la revue.

L’idée a alors germé de constituer un recueil hommage composé de nouveaux articles rédigés par des chercheurs dont les travaux ont été influencés par les recherches fondamentales et les perspectives du Dr Hutchings.

Il semble tout à fait approprié de rendre hommage au Dr Hutchings, figure emblématique des sciences halieutiques et aquatiques canadiennes, l’année même où nous célébrons le 125e anniversaire du CJFAS. Plusieurs articles retracent l’histoire de la revue, notamment le commentaire publié en 1997 par le Dr Hutchings et ses collègues, qui posait la question suivante : « La recherche scientifique est-elle incompatible avec le contrôle de l’information par les pouvoirs publics ? ». Cette question a été réexaminée vingt-cinq ans plus tard dans les pages du CJFAS.
